And more about the Philharmonic in North Korea
Terry Teachout offers this trenchant critique of the New York Philharmonic's decision to go to North Korea. You might well ask, why would I link to an article that effectively criticizes the art of cultural diplomacy? First, Mr. Teachout does not indicate that he opposes all cultural diplomacy. Second, even if he and I may disagree about the purpose of cultural diplomacy and the extent to which it can be effective, I remain overjoyed that the Philharmonic's stunning announcement has catalyzed a national discussion about cultural diplomacy. Surely, the dramatically increased prominence in arguments for and against cultural diplomacy will only make more people aware of the importance of reaching out to those with whom we differ.
